To most people, Lifeboatmen and shore crew readily come to mind when thinking of RNLI volunteers, as these are the people at the forefront of the RNLI work. However, there is also an army of volunteers who help raise money to enable the RNLI to carry out its role of saving lives at sea. One way they help is by manning the RNLI souvenir shops.
Happisburgh RNLI Souvenir Shop is seeking to recruit more volunteers to join our friendly group. The shop is situated in the Old Boathouse at Town Gap, on the cliff top adjacent to the caravan and camping site.
We try to open the shop each day from Easter to the end of October when we have enough people to call upon. Core times are 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. but these times are flexible.
The shop stocks a varied and attractive range of souvenirs, Christmas cards and calendars and all the profit from our sales go to the RNLI.
At present we have vacancies for regular shifts on Mondays and Saturdays but we also need volunteers to serve on a casual basis to cover holidays or periods of sickness etc. No previous retail experience is necessary but a welcoming, cheerful and helpful disposition would be a great asset. Full training will be provided.
Two of our volunteers are Mike and Cherry Lilley who have been regularly volunteering for four years; they commented that “the best part is meeting lots of interesting people”.
